2nd Feb 2008 Afro Yum, looks delicous

1st Feb 2008 Nicky I think the fondest memory I have of childhood food is the birthday cakes my Mum made for me. We called them colour cakes and they were simply victoria sponges cooked in a loaf tin but with the batter coloured with many different food dyes which made wonderful swirly patterns as the heat cooked the cake. My mum really went to town and used at least six different colours so the cakes were a real rainbow. Magic! Somehow all the beautiful colours made the cake taste exciting too. One year she ran out of icing sugar so the buttercream had to be made with caster sugar which made it really gritty and I loved that too.
