There are also all of the great classical pieces of Christmas celebration music - Bach's Christmas oratorio, of course, and Handel's Messiah (the original 1751 version is best), but also Prokofiev's Love For Three Oranges and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, John Tavener's Christmas Proclamation. Never forgetting any of the many recordings of the King's College, Cambridge Carols; always lovely. |

Another great heap of Christmas sounds are the jazzy ones. Bill Evans' Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, The Christmas Song by Gene Ammons or Dexter Gordon or Vince Guaraldi — in fact Guaraldi's soundtrack to the US TV seasonal perennial A Charlie Brown Christmas must have turned more small Americans on to cool, collected jazz than just about anything else. Mmmmm, nice. Make like you're sophisticated. Keep the words out of your Christmas playlist. |

What about hannukah? Not nearly so many great songs there but there are one or two. My favourites are (the late great) Phoebe Buffay's Happy Hannukah in Friends and Adam Sandler's Hannukah song — three versions of it, by my count. I've got a small cousin in New York who insists his parents play it right through the holiday season. |

I think that song is 'Stop the Cavalry' by Jona Lewie, which has the line - 'I wish I was at home, for Christmas' and a great bouncing beat. I love it too. |

One of my favourite Christmas songs is "Tomorrow shall be my dancing day". It doesn't seem a Christmassy title but I know it must a Christmas song because it is included on a CD of carols sung by cathedral choirs, which I was given ages ago. I don't know why it is not better known, because it is really good. I asked a music teacher once and she said it has a very complicated rhythm, so maybe that puts people off.
My kids like the one about the soldier - is it "Stop the Cavalry" by Jonah someone? That has a very simple strong marching rhythm. |
